Steps for Teacher

• The teacher will create a KWL chart with students about bullying

• Show students KB’s Day webisodes (http://www.stopbullyingnow.hrsa.gov/kids/)
  

• Discuss and chart with students the bullying that KB experienced.
  

• As a class identify least 3 characteristics of a bully.

 

Things Bullies do

·         Repeatedly sending cruel instant or email messages about someone

 

 

• Divide the class into two groups (boys & girls)
  

• The teacher will take one group and the SMS another.
  

• The boys will explore (http://kidshealth.org/teen/your_mind/problems/bullies.html ) and  look for 3 more characteristics of a bully and will write them down, http://kidshealth.org/teen/your_mind/problems/bullies.html

• The girls will explore (http://www.girlshealth.gov/bullying/) and find 3 more characteristics of a bully and write them down.
  

• The class will then come together and add to the characteristics of a bully chart
  

• As a class you, will then add to the KWL chart.

 

Steps for Librarian

Day 2

• Last lesson, we looked at some of the things bullies do.  Today, we are going to find ways to deal with a bully.
  

• Have students watch Webisodes 10 & 12.  KB & Melanie and Real Friends (http://www.stopbullyingnow.hrsa.gov/kids/)
  

• Chart as a class the things KB and her friend did to stop bullying.
  

• Tell the students that today we are going to read a sad story about a girl who was bullied and killed herself because she felt so bad.  We are going to identify how she was bullied and come up with an action plan that she could have used.
  

• Use the Kids Infobits to search bullying.  Show students the type of articles that are available in the database.  Guide students to the article:” A teen tragedy: girl's death puts bullying in the spotlight.” Current Events, a Weekly Reader publication, May 3, 2010 v109 i24 p4(3)

• As a class create a chart about how Phoebe Prince was bullied

• As a class brainstorm ideas for an action plan about what she could have done.

• Discuss sources of help (teachers, school counselor,, principal, parent, etc.)

 

Steps for Student

• TLW be engaged in the lesson.
  

• TLW brainstorm characteristics of a bully and what to do if being bullied.
  

• TLW create an action plan if they are being bullied.
